Imagine it’s 30 years ago, 1979: Jimmy Carter ... Iranian hostage crisis ... Susan B. Anthony ... Skylab 1 ... Unabomber ... SALT II ... the Shah of Iran ... Three-Mile Island.
In Kansas City ... a young analyst – Gary Hartman – prepares for a series on Fairy Tales. This three-night program is the inaugural event for the group, led by Barbara Cook, that would become the Kansas City Friends of Jung. While our organization became ‘official’ eight years later, we owe a great deal to those dedicated individuals in the formative years.
Since no self-respecting collective unconscious would let a thirtieth anniversary go uncelebrated, we are presented with a synchronicity as Gary leads off our 2009/2010 program season. And what a season!
As I looked over the slate of programs, the thread I noticed running through is “practical.” Gary’s lecture and workshop focus on Everyday Jungian Psychology. Three visiting analysts follow suit in their lecture/workshop programs:
- Janet Dallett discusses the role of inner life to outer health
- James Hollis helps us find meaning in the second half of life
- J. Gary Sparks explores synchronicity and connections of spirit & matter
We’re fortunate to have a rich constituency of Jungian analysts and Jungian oriented professionals in the Kansas City area. For example, analyst Lucy Sikes will offer a series to learn about Jung’s life and work in greater depth. Other topics – taught by board or emeritus board members – include mandalas, psychology of religion, working with the shadow, and music.
PLEASE NOTE: We reduced costs on many programs, especially Saturday workshops that follow Friday night lectures. These workshops offer a chance to interact with speakers in an informal and intimate setting.
We’re excited to offer programs by Janet Dallet in Lawrence. This new venue is a great opportunity for our many Lawrence friends. Kansas City folks will find her and her offerings well worth the drive!
As new president of KC Friends of Jung, I’m enthusiastic about our upcoming program year and I’m eager to meet you. Please introduce yourself. On behalf of myself and the entire board, I also want to thank Greg Rieke for his leadership as president over the past two years as he steps into a new role on the board. Always feel free to contact me at ken@kcjung.org or 816-520-1172.
